House of the Dragon Sky Atlantic, 2am & 9pm Last week’s episode finally tapped into the spirit of Game of Thrones and set the stage for this finale, when Daemon (Matt Smith) and Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) response to the Hightowers’ throne-seizing will hopefully provoke the eruption of fire and blood the series has promised. Scriptwriter Pete McTighe goes to such enormous lengths to keep viewers guessing throughout this first episode (of six), that we won’t even hint at what’s coming, but from the outset it looks like there might be something bad in Christine’s past about which she hasn’t been entirely honest. With a full change of cast and location (from Merthyr Tydfil to coastal Penarth) the focus is now on the Rees family – social worker Christine (Rakie Ayola) and her three adult children – who are struggling with a tragic loss when a stranger contacts them claiming a seemingly impossible connection. The second series turns out to be a grittier, more hard-nosed affair with a premise that seems, at first, less credulity-stretching. The Pact BBC One, 9pm The only problem with last year’s debut series of The Pact was its premise: would a group of otherwise sensible middle-aged women really kidnap their nasty boss for fun, then lie and attempt a cover-up when he accidentally (apparently) dies mid-prank? To their credit, the outstanding cast (especially Laura Fraser and Julie Hesmondhalgh) worked hard to convince us that, yes, they might, and carried viewers with them through to an entertaining finale.
